COMMISSIONER MILLER KICKS OFF 2019 TEXAS FARM FRESH JUMP WITH JILL LIVE TOUR
Students at Texas schools will cheer for good nutrition and physical activity with nationally acclaimed interactive assemblies
AUSTIN – Today, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller announced the return of the Texas Farm Fresh Jump with Jill Live Tour for the new school year. Since 2015, these Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) special events have inspired audiences with fun lessons about healthy lifestyle choices like good nutrition and exercise. The live-action nutrition assemblies will engage students at 20 schools in Northwest Texas this September and October, as well as visitors to the State Fair of Texas on October 14. New this year, farmers market visitors in Austin, Dallas and Lubbock can also enjoy Jump with Jill performances on select days.
“I am proud to have Jump with Jill on my Farm Fresh team,” said Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller. “These nationally recognized assemblies empower children and show them they can achieve great things with physical activity, good nutrition and Texas agriculture. Fun events like this, along with the Farm Fresh Challenge and Farm Fresh Friday, engage children in learning healthy lessons that will last a lifetime.”
Jump with Jill turns nutrition education into a live concert experience complete with rock ’n’ roll music. The assemblies offer a uniquely energetic and imaginative approach to health education and, in Texas, they highlight foods from the Lone Star State. Jump with Jill materials also offer structured lessons that teachers can use to reinforce the assembly’s messages in the classroom.
Commissioner Miller created the Farm Fresh Initiative to encourage the use of fresh, locally grown Texas products in local schools. The initiative builds connections between local farmers and ranchers and the TDA partners operating federal nutrition programs such as the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs, the Summer Food Service Program and the Child and Adult Care Food Program. The Farm Fresh Initiative provides resources and outreach that promote using more fresh local products in program meals and teaching Texans about the important role agriculture plays in our everyday lives. Farm Fresh activities provide a solid foundation for establishing life-long healthy habits and strengthening local economies.
