Cuero Renews Status as Certified Retirement Community in Texas (4/29/2015)

CUERO, TEXAS — Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller visited Cuero, Texas, to officially recertify the city as a GO TEXAN Certified Retirement Community (CRC) for an additional five years. The Texas Department of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN CRC program helps local communities attract potential retirees to make their homes in Texas.

“It’s exciting to announce that Cuero has renewed its status as a GO TEXAN Certified Retirement Community for another five years,” Commissioner Miller said. “Communities like Cuero offer retirees a great place to call home and plenty of things to do. Plus, retirees have a major impact on the areas they live in through their community service and contributions to local businesses. Texas is a great place to call home, and I’m excited for folks to discover great communities like Cuero.” 

Cuero is home to numerous museums including the newly opened Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum, which features educational exhibits about the area’s agricultural history. In addition, visitors and citizens have access to the Cuero Wellness Center — a 19,000-square-foot facility with cardiovascular and strength training equipment, education and activity rooms, water aerobics, a racquetball court and nutrition center.

Cuero offers a growing list of annual events like Christmas in the Park and Turkeyfest. While it started as a celebration to encourage turkey production, Turkeyfest has turned into so much more. Held the second weekend in October, the festival includes turkey-based food recipes, a carnival, live entertainment, street dances, arts and crafts, and the “Great Gobbler Gallop.”

“This designation communicates our community’s message loud and clear that life here is the way life should be for all citizens,” said Cuero Mayor Sara Meyer. “On behalf of the city council, I invite folks to come visit and then stay awhile deep in the heart of South Texas. We look forward to continuing a wonderful working relationship with the Texas Department of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN program as a Certified Retirement Community.”

The CRC program is funded by the program’s members and was created to encourage retirement in Texas and, as a result, boost the state’s economy. On average, migrant retirees each spend nearly $25,000 annually in Texas. Additionally, retirees provide a dependable part- and full-time workforce, as well as a volunteer pool.

To become a certified retirement community, each community must complete a rigorous application process, including a retiree desirability assessment. The GO TEXAN stamp of approval ensures each certified community has demonstrated through its application that it can meet the living, employment/volunteer, health, entertainment, education and safety needs of its citizens and visitors — all things that make Texas a great place to retire.
