Commissioner Miller Recognizes City of Pottsboro as New Go Texan Certified Retirement Community (4/6/2015)

AUSTIN - Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller officially honored the city of Pottsboro as a GO TEXAN Certified Retirement Community (CRC). The Texas Department of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN CRC program helps communities attract retirees and potential retirees to make their homes in Texas.

“We are proud to recognize the city of Pottsboro as a GO TEXAN Certified Retirement Community,” Commissioner Miller said. “Communities that are given this designation are important drivers in their regional economies and provide tremendous value to the lives of their residents. There is an energy about Pottsboro that makes it a great destination for folks to visit, and it’s a great place to retire.”

More than 400,000 U.S. citizens and 33,000 Texans retire each year, according to the Pew Research Center. The Texoma region is already a top choice for recreation with excellent boating, fishing, camping and hiking opportunities — all of which is within minutes of Pottsboro. A community of more than 8,000 people, Pottsboro is located near the commercial centers of Sherman and Denison, and it’s less than an hour from the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. The community offers many amenities, along with a slower pace of life and affordability that is perfect for retirees.

“We are very excited to be a part of the GO TEXAN program and to be designated as a Certified Retirement Community,” said Pottsboro Mayor Frank Budra. “Pottsboro’s motto is, Come play, Come stay, and we are dedicated to welcoming mature, active adults to our community. Pottsboro affords quality of life opportunities including recreation, volunteerism, cultural activities and lifelong learning.”

More about the GO TEXAN CRC Program

The CRC program is funded by the program’s members and was created to encourage retirement in Texas and, as a result, boost the state’s economy. On average, migrant retirees each spend nearly $25,000 annually in Texas. Additionally, retirees provide a dependable part- and full-time workforce, as well as a volunteer pool.

To become a certified retirement community, each community must complete a rigorous application process, including a retiree desirability assessment. The GO TEXAN stamp of approval ensures each certified community has demonstrated through its application that it can meet the living, employment/volunteer, health, entertainment, education and safety needs of its citizens and visitors — all things that make Texas a great place to retire.
