STATEMENT FROM TEXAS AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER SID MILLER ON TRUMP’S ANNOUNCEMENT ON CHINA TRADE VICTORY AND TARIFF REDUCTION (5/13/2025)

"I commend President Donald J. Trump for unveiling the agreement with China aimed at reducing tariffs, eliminating retaliation, sustaining a baseline tariff on China, and laying the groundwork for future discussions to enhance market access for American exports. As part of this agreement, both the United States and China will reduce tariffs by 115%, while also maintaining an additional 10% tariff. Other measures from the U.S. will stay the same.

The announcement of a new tariff agreement between the United States and China represents an important victory for America, especially for our farmers, ranchers, and rural communities. After years of enduring unfair trade practices and retaliatory tariffs, the U.S. is finally reclaiming fairness in our global trade relationships. With a 2024 trade deficit of $295.4 billion, the largest among any U.S. trading partner, this agreement marks a critical step toward restoring prosperity to the American economy.

Once again, President Donald J. Trump fulfilled his promise to protect American workers and confront foreign competitors directly. For American agriculture, this agreement demonstrates that trust in the Trump Administration was well placed and will be richly rewarded. Bold action produces bold results.”
