Commissioner Miller Celebrates National Pecan Month, Praises Texas Growers (4/1/2026)

National Pecan Month highlights Texas’ leadership in U.S. pecan production and crop’s robust economic impact

AUSTIN – Commissioner Miller and the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) today recognized April as National Pecan Month. Praising the Texas growers, processors, and farming families whose hard work helps Texas lead the nation in pecan production, the Commissioner urged Texans to pause and appreciate the historic and delicious role pecans have played in Texas culture and daily life.

“The pecan tree is our state tree, and pecans are as Texan as it gets,” Commissioner Miller said. “They’ve been part of our land, our tables, and our way of life for generations. That’s not just agriculture, that’s a legacy. Whether it’s a slice of pecan pie at the kitchen table or a handful of roasted pecans out in the field, this crop brings people together.”

Texas ranks third in pecan production nationwide, with an estimated 170,000 to 200,000 acres of groves statewide generating approximately $240 million to $300 million in direct economic value before reaching processors, retailers, or exporters. Pecan production achieves approximately $380 million in total economic impact. Meanwhile, a pecan orchard can be productive for generations, sustaining family farms and rural communities.

The pecan also has deep roots in Texas history and culture. Legendary cattle drovers Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving planned their first long-distance cattle drive under a pecan tree in Palo Pinto County, while Texas Governor James Hogg appreciated the nut so well that he requested a pecan tree be planted instead of a headstone at his resting place in the Texas State Cemetery. And of course, the pecan is a star of Texas tables, featuring in such cherished traditional delicacies as Texas sheet cake, pralines, and pecan pie—named the state dessert in 2013.

“During National Pecan Month, I encourage every Texan to support our growers and choose Texas-grown pecans whenever you can,” Commissioner Miller said. “When you do, you’re backing the hard-working men and women who keep this tradition alive.”

TDA supports pecan growers through marketing and trade promotion assistance and targeted grants. Through the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program, TDA administers federal funding each year to support research, innovation, and market development for Texas specialty crops such as pecans, helping ensure Texas pecan producers remain resilient, productive, and competitive at home and globally.

For information on Specialty Crop Grants and other support programs, pecan producers and processors are encouraged to visit the TDA Grants and Services page.
