Commissioner Miller Recognizes City of Seguin as New GO TEXAN Certified Retirement Community (5/20/2016)

AUSTIN — Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller today officially honored the city of Seguin as a GO TEXAN Certified Retirement Community (CRC). The Texas Department of Agriculture’s (TDA) GO TEXAN CRC program helps communities attract retirees and potential retirees to make their homes in Texas.

“We are proud to recognize the city of Seguin as a GO TEXAN Certified Retirement Community,” Commissioner Miller said. “Communities that are given this designation are important drivers in their regional economies and provide tremendous value to the lives of their residents. There is an energy about Seguin that makes it a great destination for folks to visit, and it’s a great place to retire.”

Seguin is a small town with tree-lined streets graced by Queen Anne style mansions and charming bungalows. It is a community of neighborhoods where families live among people of all incomes, ages and backgrounds. More than 25,000 residents enjoy a range of cultural and recreational opportunities, including a park along the Guadalupe River and the Sebastopol House Historic Site. Seguin has a moderate climate, beautiful waterways and lush natural surroundings. In addition, Seguin offers police and fire departments, schools, libraries, parks and recreation facilities, public utilities and other services for citizens.

"It is a great honor to be chosen as a GO TEXAN Certified Retirement Community,” said Seguin Mayor Don Keil. “Those of us who already live in Seguin know what a great city we have, and we invite everyone to come to Seguin to share in the ‘good life’ that we all enjoy here.”

TDA’s Assistant Commissioner for Water and Rural Affairs Dan Hunter presented Mayor Keil with the official certificate welcoming Seguin into the CRC program and designating their status as a certified community this evening at the Seguin City Council Chambers.

More about the GO TEXAN CRC Program

The CRC program is funded by the program’s members and was created to encourage retirement in Texas and, as a result, boost the state’s economy. On average, migrant retirees contribute $732 million annually to the Texas economy. Additionally, retirees provide a dependable part- and full-time workforce, and volunteer pool.

To become a certified retirement community, each community must complete a rigorous application process, including a retiree desirability assessment. The GO TEXAN stamp of approval ensures each certified community has demonstrated through its application that it can meet the living, employment/volunteer, health, entertainment, education and safety needs of its citizens and visitors — all things that make Texas a great place to retire.
