TDA Launches Texas Farm Fresh Tour in Rio Grande Valley (9/16/2016)

The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) is excited to announce this year’s Texas Farm Fresh Jump with Jill Live Tour, an innovative approach to teaching children about nutrition and Texas agriculture that features an interactive music show. The Texas Farm Fresh Jump with Jill Live Tour is making its way to schools and child care centers throughout the Rio Grande Valley during September and October, as well as stopping by the State Fair of Texas on Oct. 7.

“TDA is helping more Texas children realize that eating nutritious foods and exercising daily makes them part of a very cool — and healthy — crowd,” said Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller. “As part of our innovative Farm Fresh Initiative, the live Jump with Jill event provides valuable lessons about good nutrition and Texas agriculture in a way that children will connect with and remember for years to come.”

Jump with Jill incorporates music and dance to turn nutrition education into a live concert. The show takes kids on a journey to a world where healthy living is not just an important thing to do, but the cool thing to do. The audience learns songs that show why everyone should eat breakfast and how eating nutritious foods from the Lone Star State is fun and healthy.

TDA’s statewide Farm Fresh Initiative encourages schools, child care centers and summer meal sponsors to purchase more local food and create healthy meals that kids enjoy eating. TDA partners also are encouraged to offer education regarding local food, agriculture and nutrition through classroom lessons, taste testing, connecting with agricultural producers and garden-based learning. Farm Fresh activities also strengthen local economies. For every $1 spent on local food, $2.16 of economic activity is generated.
