Commissioner Miller Kicks Off School Breakfast Week (3/4/2019)

AUSTIN – Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller announced the start of School Breakfast Week, which runs March 4 through 8, and reminds Texas students that a great day starts with a healthy breakfast. The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) administers the School Breakfast Program in Texas, collaborating with more than 8,000 schools to serve about 1.8 million breakfasts every school day. During School Breakfast Week, eating a winning breakfast has special significance as staff, students and faculty join in the celebration. This year, schools across the Lone Star State are using TDA resources with the theme Level Up with a Healthy Breakfast.

“Eating breakfast at school ensures more children have the energy they need to learn all morning long,” Commissioner Miller said. “School Breakfast Week gives schools the opportunity to champion starting the day with a healthy breakfast. I look forward to seeing how Texas schools will teach children about good nutrition and Texas agriculture during this week’s celebrations.”

TDA provided schools with a variety of Level Up with a Healthy Breakfast resources including menus featuring Texas agricultural products in the recipes. Other resources include posters and participation charts for display in the cafeteria and selfie stations students can use for social media photos. The promotional materials developed for School Breakfast Week 2019 were inspired by winning student artwork from the You ART What You Eat statewide art contest.

Providing these materials is one way TDA supports school nutrition teams and their work to serve nutritious and appealing breakfasts in Texas schools. Texas school nutrition professionals must meet strict federal nutrition standards while serving appealing meals that fuel students for a day of success. By participating in School Breakfast Week and other initiatives, including TDA’s Farm Fresh Fridays and October’s Farm Fresh Challenge, schools can energize students’ appreciation for nutritious meals and Texas agriculture.
