USDA Suspends Import Livestock Inspection in Reynosa and Nuevo Laredo

Date: 4/7/10

Due to heightened security concerns along the U.S.-Mexico border, USDA has suspended routing inspection duties for livestock being offered for importation to the United States from Mexico at the Reynosa and Nuevo Laredo ports of entry. These Mexico cities are adjacent to the Texas cities of Hidalgo and Laredo, respectively. It is estimated that the closure of these two ports should affect only 11 percent of cattle being offered for entry into the United States since other import ports of entry remain open.

At this time, this closure will not affect U.S. livestock exports to Mexico at any of the Texas Department of Agriculture's Livestock Export Facilities. For more information regarding TDA's livestock export operations, go to or contact Jon Garza at (512) 463-6098 or
